Spark ignition gasoline and compression ignition diesel engines differ in how they supply and ignite the fuel. Whilst advances in electric vehicles are proven suited to leisure and light automotive applications, performance does not yet match the demands of heavy industry. The road to net zero emissions must therefore entail new technologies and power sources. This has in part driven global advancement in diesel-hydrogen hybrid engines.
Diesel-hydrogen hybrid engines can deliver a cleaner source of power without the environmental challenges that lithium batteries present. Through industry-leading partnerships, Volvo Penta is helping create the purpose built power solutions necessary to navigate this transformative road. Volvo Penta and partner CMB.TECH are helping customers transition to net-zero emissions while delivering on a commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Case Study:
At Bauma 2022 in Munich, Germany, Volvo Penta showcased a dual-fuel engine utilizing hydrogen as a renewable fuel source. Based on the existing D8, an inline six-cylinder, 7.7 L diesel engine, the dual-fuel configuration reduces CO2 emissions as much as 80%. The engine is the result of a partnership with CMB.Tech to develop a dual-fuel hydrogen-powered solution. CMB.Tech provides and trials the hydrogen add-on kit and tank system that works in conjunction with the Volvo Penta D8 engine and software.
The 8 L variable-speed, Stage V engine operates much like the conventional D8, delivering the same power and torque curve, while using hydrogen as the primary fuel rather than diesel. If hydrogen is unavailable, the engine can continue to run on traditional diesel. The technology is relatively simple, said Anders Wernersson, product manager for the dual-fuel hydrogen engine, and can be installed with minimal disruption.
