Volvo Penta has announced that it is helping to power a novel fleet of unmanned surface robots for subsea exploration. The maritime and scientific community have set themselves the ambitious target to map the entire ocean floor by 2030 with a world first fleet of commercial autonomous robot exploration vessels. Volvo Penta and Danfoss Editron have been selected to be part of this truly unique venture, through delivery of a full hybrid propulsion, power plant system and control and energy management system for world leading marine robotics company Ocean Infinity.
Ocean Infinity performs hydrographic geophysical surveys of the seabed using the most advanced fleet of AUVs and USVs in the world. With their Armada robot fleet they will be able to perform offshore data acquisition and intervention operations down to a depth of 6,000 meters. These ships will be capable of remotely deploying a wide range of the latest sensors as well as AUVs and ROVs for visual and acoustic data acquisition. The Armada fleet requires neither people on board nor a host vessel nearby.
